We are very pleased to announce that Deborah Solomon, PhD Candidate, was awarded for the International Institute Language Fellowship (IILF) 2008-2009. Deborah is a PhD student at the Department of History, and her field of interest is modern Japanese and Korean history.

"Koryo Saram-The Unreliable People" has won the National Board of Canada's Best Documentary Award at the 2007 Toronto Reel Asian International Film festival.  The film was produced by the University of Michigan Center for Korean Studies and the Executive Producer was Meredith Woo. The film was co-directed by Y. David Chung and Matt Dibble.

Nam gifts to U-M total $4.3 million for Korean Studies (link to U-M Record story)

Professor Meredith Woo is appointed LSA Associate Dean of Social Sciences and Associate Professor David Chung is named the new Director for the Center for Korean Studies.

Assistant Professor Youngju Ryu joins the faculty of Asian Languages and Cultures.

With deepest appreciation, we bid best wishes to Kristy Demas who will join the LSA Development Office and we welcome Jiyoung Lee, our new administrator.

General Motors announces a new scholarship for Korea focused undergraduates.

We would like to congratulate Monica Kim who has recently received a Fulbright Scholar Award. U-M produced the highest number of 2007-08 Fulbright awards for American students, with 37 receiving grants. Yale University followed with 27 grantees. Amongst 37 U-M produced awardees is Monica Kim who conducted research on "Narrating Human Rights and the Nation during the Korean War".
