Funding for Students


Numerous funding options are available for students in Japanese Studies for language study, research travel to Japan, graduate study, travel to conferences for paper presentation and professional development, dissertation fieldwork, dissertation writing, and postdoctoral study and research. The Center encourages students to apply for funding, and the Student Services Coordinator is available to consult with students on funding options

Center for Japaense Studies Funding

The Center for Japanese Studies provides conference travel funding and summer and academic year fellowships on a competitive basis to University of Michigan graduate and professional students whose studies focus on Japan. Applicants must be admitted by a UM graduate degree program to be considered for Center funding. Prospective students should submit a funding application at the same time as their admission application. Fellowship awards vary in size and range from several hundred dollars to full tuition and stipend, depending on the applicant's merit and fund availability.

Other Funding Sources at the University of Michigan

A number of units offer funding for students in Japanese Studies for graduate study, conference travel, and research travel.

  • International Institute has a number of fellowships for international research travel and international internships.  It also coordinates UM student applications for Fulbright Fellowships, Fulbright-Hays Fellowships, and NSEP David L. Boren Fellowships.
  • Rackham School of Graduate Studies offers funding for international research, graduate study, and conference travel for paper presentation.
