DEPARTMENT OF GERMANIC LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES

German, Dutch, Flemish and Swedish

The German department provides students with an excellent opportunity to learn about the EU through several courses that were developed with CES-EUC sponsorship. Its abundant other courses feature sequences in business and law, conversation, film, gender studies, history and culture, linguistics, literature, music/visual arts, politics/society, and science and engineering. Department offerings include a lecture series, a film series, an annual German Day event, and a German-speaking residence. It has won student awards for excellence and has a highly respected graduate program, known for its accomplished faculty and radical interdisciplinarity. German Studies cooperates with the engineering school to offer a German track in the Program in Global Engineering < www.engin.umich.edu/ipe/ >.

The Dutch and Flemish Studies program within the German department offers a four-semester language sequence, sponsors lectures and a Dutch writer-in-residence, and has a close relationship with the Netherlands America University League (NAUL) as well as with the American Association for Netherlandic Studies (AANS).  The program has a history of involvement with the Netherlands Visiting Professorship, administered by CES-EUC.

The curriculum  for the Dutch program has been developed by Antonius (Ton) Broos. His experience, knowledge and overall enthusiasm for teaching of all things Dutch make a great atmosphere in which to learn Dutch language, history, literature and culture. Dutch program has its annual DeVries-Vanderkooy Lecture every October.

Another departmental asset, the Scandinavian Studies program offers four semesters of Swedish, sponsors an annual Signe Karlström Event (which CES-EUC has co-sponsored) and helps students secure internships in Scandinavian countries.  It participates in the Michigan-Uppsala University Exchange Program where students study for a full academic year at Uppsala University, Sweden.

 

DEPARTMENT OF ROMANCE LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES

French, Italian and Spanish

In addition to their large variety of courses in French, Italian and Spanish language and literature, the Romance department offers special topics courses each semester that illuminate specific regions and cultures in France , Italy and Spain . Romance sponsors an array of events; it administers the Vincenti Study Abroad Scholarship and publishes two academic journals, Disposito: American Journal of Culture and Histories and Michigan Romance Studies.

PROGRAM IN MODERN GREEK

The Modern Greek Program of the Department of Classical Studies offers courses in the Greek language, literature, culture, and history, and encourages its students to take classes in the  anthropology of Europe, Byzantine and Balkan history, Art History, and Political Science. It offers a class on Athens that also takes students to Greece's capital city. The Program hosts an array of events and speakers on topics related to Europe. It administers Foundation  for Modern Greek Studies travel and research grants for work in Greece and awards yearly student prizes for exceptional work  related to the Greek legacy through the Arthur and Mary Platsis Fund.
