UM in China

The University of Michigan - Peking University Joint Institute

The University of Michigan - Peking University Joint Institute was established by the University of Michigan and Peking University to develop teaching and research activities in China, to share educational resources and to promote educational reform.

As universities of the world, UM and PKU are dedicated to the production and dissemination of knowledge in a global context. The purpose of the Joint Institute is to provide an international platform that facilitates and organizes such training and research through joint academic programs.

At the present time there are three programs at the Joint Institute:

  • Chinese Studies and Social Theory - offers graduate-level instruction to students seeking advanced training in the theories and methods of Chinese Studies.
  • Survey Methodology and Quantitative Analysis Laboratory (SQL) - trains graduate and undergraduate students, as well as junior scholars, in survey, statistical, and demographical methods.
  • Summer Undergraduate Exchange Program - In the summer of 2007, a Pilot Program in Chemistry allowed 7 students (3 from UM and 4 from PKU) to work closely together with each other and members of the host laboratory. This is an excellent opportunity for American and Chinese students to experience living and working in each other's countries.
