Nicolas Van De Walle, Maxwell M. Upson Professor of Government and Chair, Department of Government, Cornell University

Nicolas van de Walle is the Maxwell M. Upson Professor and chair of the Department of Government, Cornell University. His primary field is comparative politics. His teaching and research focuses on the political economy of development, with a special focus on Africa; on
democratization, and on the politics of economic reform. He is the author, editor and coeditor of a long list of books including Overcoming Stagnation in Aid-Dependent Countries, (Washington DC: Center for Global Development, 2005); Beyond Structural Adjustment: the Institutional Context of African Development. (New York: Palgrave MacMillan, 2003). (Co-edited with Nicole Ball and Vijaya Ramachandran); African Economies and the Politics of Permanent Crisis, 1979-1999. (New York: Cambridge University Press, 2001).(Winner of Gregory M. Luebbert Prize of 2001 for best book in field of comparative politics) and Democratic Experiments in Africa: Regime Transitions in Comparative Perspective. (New York: Cambridge University Press, 1997). (with Michael Bratton).
