Mathakga Botha’s current doctoral research examines effective use of assessment data in South African primary schools to improve teaching and learning. Research on benchmark test results shows poor performance by South African learners in the area of literacy and numeracy as compared to their peers in other parts of Africa and across the globe. There is little or no evidence to support claims made by South African politicians and senior education officials that assessment data enables them to monitor performance or that poor performing schools are being held accountable and encouraged to improve. The study also examines the potential impact of school leaders using assessment data to encourage educators to collaborate in improving learner achievement.
